Our first visit to Microlibrary Warak Kayu Semarang wasn’t as eventful. The library was unexpectedly closed on the days we’re in Semarang. I was disappointed because it was high on my list, aside from the Dharma Boutique Coffee Roaster near the hotel where I’m staying, and I’m purposefully staying over the weekdays too.
Microlibrary Warak Kayu Semarang nestled near the city center, next to a busy street. It’s a small, oddly shaped wooden structure on the parking lot near Taman Kasmaran, in between kiosks that sell flowers and Dr. Kariadi Hospital.
My first impression upon arriving at the structure is, “why is this so small?” Dudu had the same thought. It was much smaller than we expected. Yes, it’s called a micro library, but still, I expected the building to be bigger. The door was locked, but there was no notice on the outside. So, I checked their social media just to find out they are closed for the day. Too bad.
The Microlibrary Warak Kayu Semarang book collection really surprised us. They have a diverse variety of books, especially children books and manga. Time flies before we know it because we found our favorite manga in one corner.
There is a wooden swing downstairs that can be used to sit and gather, or wait if the library is full. For someone as tall as Dudu, moving around the library is a bit of a challenge because of the height.
So, who’s behind this Microlibrary Warak Kayu project?
Sources said that this library is designed by SHAU (Suryawinata Heinzelmann Architecture Urbanism) Indonesia and built with the support of local communities, private sector, and local governments. It’s said to be the fifth building of the microlibrary project. The concept was “Rumah Panggung,” a famous elevated-house concept within Indonesian culture. The library is a donation from Arkatama Isvara Foundation, and is currently run by a local charity group called Harvey Center.
How to get to the Microlibrary Warak Kayu?
I drive around Semarang. But if you’re on public transport, several buses pass by Taman Kasmaran, where the library is located. There are bus stops in front of Dr. Kariadi Hospital, which is a 5-minute walk from the library. I’ve also seen the smaller bus (angkot) passing by and stopping in front of the flower kiosks right next to the library. The library isn’t far from Tugu Muda and Lawang Sewu. So, if you stay in a nearby hotel, check the maps for walking distance. Just remember that Semarang is really HOT. Hydrate and dress accordingly if you plan to walk.
A few things to note for your visit:
- Don’t arrive wearing a skirt. The library is an open-aired space, on the second floor. We have to sit on a wooden floor while reading. Also, there is a hammock-like space that’s going to be hard to enjoy with a skirt. Although the hammock is designed only for kids or lightweight adults.
- Bring bottled water. It can be hot inside if you come during the day.
- They close for lunch break at 12:00 noon to 1:00 PM everyday. Plan your visit accordingly.
- Avoid bringing bulky backpacks and other items because the space is small. They do have boxes where you can leave your items there, but those are limited also.
- Check their social media for announcements.
